Kandal Pokkudan..story of Mangrove Man
Zinemaya is featuring the story of Kandal Pokkudan, an amazing real life documentary on life and work of a low caste man from rural south India. As his name suggests , Kandal (Mangrove) Pokkudan (name given to low caste people) is the guardian-angel of Mangroves, initiated the grass-root movement for its preservation.
Pokkudan started planting mangroves at the age of 52 and that created a lot of Mangroves forest in the Kannur district of kerala. In four decades, mangrove forest area in the state of kerala had dropped from over 700 sq km to a paltry 17 sq km. Kannur still has nearly 45 percent of the state’s remaining wetlands, thanks mostly to Pokkudan’s initiatives.

About the Film maker – Sanju Surendran
Born in 1980, Sanju Surendran majored in Zoology and was associated with Film clubs and Documentary film making before joining the Film & TV Institute of Pune, India. He completed his graduation in Film Direction in 2007. At present he is working on an Independent script.

And I have one Request, There is a Man called Aravindan from Palakkad District, and one Guy Called Rajesh from Kottayam District, they are promoting people to plant fruit trees and plants. They are making Campaigns to aware the people about the importance of planting Fruit Trees.
This is a crucial situation, Climate is changing and Global Warming is increasing day by day. These people are doing an excellent job in this crucial situation by planting Fruit Trees, which will be useful for Planet Earth and our Future Generation. Kandal (kallen) Pokkudan & His son Sreejith Beaten a Dalit Woman-WHAT A SHAME…….
According to Network News-”This incident happened at Muttukandaikkal, payangadi,kannur-On saturday 16-01-2010, morning Kandal pokkudan & his son Sreejith took the stones from the walls of Padamadakki Thamburati Temple and was blocking the public way.This dalit women raised voiced against this. For this reason Kandal Pokkudan & his son Sreejith has beaten this women so badly. Later this women was admitted to the Hospital with huge injuries.Police case was charged aganist kandal Pokkudan and his son sreejitih.This is a real shame. This is a cruel behavior from the man who himself calls as the Kandal(Mangrove) Pokkudan.”
